Today we approach the figure of aid workers, who work generously and under very harsh conditions to defend the fundamental rights of people in poverty. oxfam-cooperators A group of beneficiaries of the literacy program for women in the community of Nerewalo, Mauritania © Pablo Tosco / Oxfam Intermón Cooperators: the link between NGOs and communities In most cases, the cooperators are those who execute the projects that the NGOs define and those who verify in situ the development of the projects and the needs that arise. These are some premises that aid workers usually take into account when working: Let the local communities be the protagonists of the project : it is not about imposing new ways of working, new habits or ways of understanding community life. It is about involving people in poverty in their own development so that they are the ones who assume and lead the changes that NGOs propose and can maintain them in the long term. Respect the local reality : it is essential that cooperators value what already exists, what is already done and what is already known in the community. A program will only be successful if it is defined by evaluating it in its context.
Essential that the aid worker understands the culture of the people who welcome him: the language, the values, the customs... Add efforts : cooperation must be a sum of efforts, therefore everyone involved in the project must commit to participating. Pay attention to the process : what really counts when carrying out a project, beyond meeting the objectives, is the process followed. Be the bridge between the NGO and the community : the role of the cooperator is to be the union between both and transmit the logic of the community to the NGO and vice versa. Work to disappear : the project will have been achieved if, once completed, the community is able to survive with its own resources. The aid worker works on the ground to little by little transfer responsibilities and decision-making to the community itself with the sole purpose of becoming an unnecessary actor. These are some of their testimonies: One of them is Óscar López , director of Oxfam in Paraguay. His job consists of organizing and developing with his team the programs that allow us to fulfill the institutional mission in the country. They work with and for the most vulnerable populations, contributing to improving and changing their living conditions . He has been part of several organizations, both cooperation and promotion of citizen participation, and has also worked in neighborhood spaces. Or Josep Ferrer , member of the Sustainable Livelihoods team, who collaborates with the teams in Africa and Latin America in the design and evaluation of support programs for small producers. According to his own testimony: "What I like most about my job is getting to know our projects up close and discussing how to approach them, through interviews and visits to local organizations. The big difference between working in the field and doing it at headquarters is that in the field you work directly for the projects and we know the people we support closely.” This is his testimony about some of the work he has had the opportunity to carry out: “In Ethiopia we work in the Great Rift Valley so that farming families can produce surplus horticultural products through irrigated agriculture and sell them in local and national markets.
